Dear Sirs,
When I contacted the Eating Disorders Association, I was feeling desperate. I seemed totally unable to stick to any diet for any period of time.
They gave me the name of Richard Bloom, a hypnotherapist who was listed as being a therapist who can help people with eating disorders.
After some careful thought I decided to give it a go. I phoned Mr. Bloom who seemed knowledgeable and understanding. He told me that it would take around three to five one hour sessions. This was the average time based on past experience.
At the first appointment he took information on my medical history, the symptoms I was experiencing, and a brief family history. Then he told me exactly how he was going to hypnotise me, and showed me some signed letters from people who he had had successes with.
In these letters Mr. Bloom had asked what being hypnotised was like for them. They all said the same sort of thing. It was not what they expected. They could get up at any time if they wanted to, and they remembered everything.
I was then taken into deep relaxation hypnosis by Mr. Bloom. I didn’t know what to expect, but I felt the same as the people in the letters, relaxed, in full control, and I remembered everything that took place.
What Mr. Bloom did over the next four sessions was to find out why I was eating more than I required. He said that EVERY person with an eating disorder has a REASON or REASONS to eat. We found out the exact reasons why I ate the way I did.
It turned out that the reasons why I ate so much were decided by my experiences as a four year old and seven year old. Throughout the sessions when we were looking into my past experiences at the root of my eating disorder, Mr. Bloom made sure I stayed calm and relaxed. Going back to past experiences is in this way not frightening and very unemotional.
I only know the therapy worked because I began to change.
I stopped buying the crisps and sweets. I started to think less and less about food. I stopped piling my plate up with food every meal and finishing off other people’s leftovers.
I went on an official diet but soon stopped because I didn’t need it. I was eating less without having to force myself. I now find it easier to eat less fattening foods anyway and am losing weight steadily.
The whole therapy from beginning to end took five one hour sessions, over a period of eight weeks. Total cost under £150.
I hope this letter will help others to seek hypnotherapy. Richard Bloom is a member of the Association of Qualified Hypnotherapists. 10 Balaclava Road, Birmingham. B14 7SG (021) 441 1775.
Yours faithfully
Mrs. TH
A couple of months ago I broke a tooth while eating a roll. After the initial shock of what had happened had worn off I realized the tooth did not hurt and was extremely relieved that I did not have to go the dentist. However, in a moment of sensible thought I decided that I could not continue to only seek emergency dental treatment when the pain I was experiencing was greater than my fear of the dentist. I had been doing this for nearly 20 years My teeth were rotting and falling apart. So I made an appointment to see Richard Bloom for hypnotherapy.
Richard began by explaining what would happen during the session and then asked me some questions about my experiences of going to the dentist. He then talked me through a process of relaxation before asking me questions that needed only the raising of one of two fingers as a yes/no response. Although I felt relaxed, I was not sure I was hypnotized and was, therefore, amazed when my yes and no fingers rose without any conscious thought or effort from me as Richard asked me questions to discover the beginnings of my fear of dentists. As each experience was explored I remained calm and peaceful – not feeling any of the panic usually associated with even thinking about going to the dentist.
The whole sessions lasted a little over an hour. I was not sure how effective it had been – but I did feel extremely de-stressed!
The following day I found myself phoning a dentist for an appointment, and a week later I was on my way – with a friend in tow for support if needed. I felt some apprehension as I walked through the door and again when called in to sit in the chair. But this was nothing compare to my usually feelings of total fear, panic and overwhelming urge to run away.
Because this was my first trip to the dentist for many years I needed a lot of work done and went for a total of 8 appointments. I have to say that some of the treatments were not pleasant, but I was happy to go on my own after the first couple of times and was even able to laugh and joke with the dentist – instead of being ‘rooted’ to the chair willing myself not to run away till the treatment had finished.
As I sat in the dentist waiting room for the last appointment, I remembered how far I had come with just one hypnotherapy session. Prior to seeing Richard I had tried several times to see a dentist for a routine check up – a couple of times I got as far as picking up the phone and making an appointment, but both times the smell and sounds in the waiting room were too much for me and I fled. Now, here I was, sitting in the waiting room - reading a magazine like a ‘normal’ person. Hoping it would be my turn next as I had other things to get on with rather than desperately hoping it would never be my turn.
The experience of hypnotherapy itself is a pleasant, relaxing one, and the results are amazing. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it to anyone.
